Venus with a Mirror by Titian, 1555

Venus with a Mirror

Titian1555Oil on canvas

Titian's voluptuous Venus gazes at her reflection held by two cupids — one holding the mirror, one crowning her with a wreath. The composition was so admired that Titian painted at least four versions. The sumptuous red curtain, luminous skin, and deep fur create one of the richest palettes in Venetian Renaissance painting.

Color Mood

Opulently Venetian. Crimson, gold, and luminous flesh — Titian's richest combination. The black fur makes the skin glow with impossible warmth. No painter before or since has made luxury feel so tactile through color alone.
