View of Auvers-sur-Oise

Paul Cézanne1879Oil on canvas

Stolen on New Year's Day 2000 while fireworks distracted Oxford's attention, Cézanne's luminous landscape has been missing for over two decades. Valued at $10 million, it was taken along with several other works. The thief has never been identified.

Color Mood

Structurally serene. Cézanne builds the landscape from interlocking planes of green and blue — each brushstroke a deliberate architectural decision. The palette of someone treating nature as geometry.

Stolen from Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (2000) — whereabouts unknown
