The Storm on the Sea of Galilee by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1633

The Storm on the Sea of Galilee

Rembrandt van Rijn1633Oil on canvas

Rembrandt's only seascape, stolen alongside The Concert in the 1990 Gardner Museum heist. The painting depicts Christ calming a storm — fourteen figures on a dramatically tilting vessel. Unrecovered after more than three decades.

Color Mood

Dramatically turbulent. Storm dark against sail white — Rembrandt captures elemental terror with his characteristic warm light pulling figures from the surrounding darkness.

Stolen from Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston (1990) — whereabouts unknown
