Sistine Chapel Ceiling by Michelangelo, 1512

Sistine Chapel Ceiling

Michelangelo1512Fresco

Commissioned by Pope Julius II in 1508, the Sistine Chapel ceiling took four years and nearly destroyed Michelangelo's health. The 500 square metre fresco depicts nine scenes from Genesis across the central vault, surrounded by prophets, sibyls, and ancestors of Christ. The restoration completed in 1994 revealed that the original colors were far more vivid than centuries of candle soot had suggested.

Color Mood

Monumentally vibrant. The post-restoration palette shocked the world — Michelangelo was a colorist of bold, almost Fauvist intensity. Acid greens, vivid pinks, and sky blues that no one expected from the Sistine ceiling.
