Self-Portrait with Beret by Rembrandt van Rijn, 1630

Self-Portrait with Beret

Rembrandt van Rijn1630Oil on copper

Stolen in a brazen armed robbery from the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm on New Year's Eve 2000 alongside two Renoirs. The tiny self-portrait on copper was recovered in Los Angeles five years later when thieves attempted to use it as a bargaining chip in a drug deal.

Color Mood

Intensely concentrated. Even on a small copper surface, Rembrandt creates the full drama of his mature style — warm light pulling a young face from absolute darkness. One of his earliest self-portraits.

Nationalmuseum, Stockholm (stolen 2000, recovered 2005)
