Doni Tondo by Michelangelo, 1507

Doni Tondo

Michelangelo1507Tempera and oil on panel

The only completed panel painting by Michelangelo, commissioned for the wedding of Agnolo Doni and Maddalena Strozzi. The tightly wound figures of the Holy Family fill a circular frame in extraordinary poses that anticipate the Mannerist style. The palette is deliberately shocking — acid greens, vivid oranges, and icy blues that feel more like the 20th century than the 16th.

Color Mood

Deliberately jarring. Green, orange, blue, and pink in their most saturated forms — Michelangelo uses color as a kind of visual aggression. The Doni Tondo proves he was the most radical colorist of the Renaissance.
